Early Works

The early works are my precious paintings and illustrations  done prior to 2004. The year I started creating art for sale. Back when  I  lived in tiny NYC apartments or while traveling i created these obsessive psychedelic pieces that would take weeks and weeks to complete. I’d find a corner in the room and disappear into my world where I would simultaneously listen to the conversations and draw. It provided a distance and maybe a safety between me and the world.

'Gainesville'

'Gainesville'

Made in Gainesville, FL 98. I lived in G-ville for 6 months while my brother went to the Florida School of Massage. I found my way back here and now it’s home.

The stories, energies and where I was physically, emotionally and spiritually are embedded into each of these early pieces. Like a visual journal of my life. Many were done while traveling with rock bands in the 90’s and saw the world with me. Their titles and features are all heavily symbolic. As the same symbols started appearing in every piece I had to identify what they represent. This one I call a spirit guide.  spirit guideLittle angelic creatures are symbolic of an angel, a spirit, a guide, a helper. The sweet voice you need to hear on a hard day that says “it’s going to be ok”. Or a feeling you get that makes you feel not so alone. Since the early works more symbols have been recognized. It’s been nice to defer to it whenever asked “so what’s  this about?”  At first I thought giving out a symbols chart was a clever way of keeping my privacy but now I see it as a way for people to  really  look into their own life, experience and reflect on how the painting speaks to them. That’s really what I want my art to accomplish.

The ‘Early Works” originals are not for sale but you can enjoy the work on a number of other products at Sincerely Joy.
